Jeremy Renner spent much of the 1990s living in homes with no electricity or hot water while working as a makeup artist at a major department store in Los Angeles to pay for acting classes. He had no industry connections and lacked the symmetrical face agencies wanted for romantic comedies. He had a broad jaw, almond-shaped eyes and a sullen gaze that puzzled casting directors.

He made his film debut with National Lampoon's Senior Trip in 1995, a student comedy panned by critics that slipped past multiplex audiences. During that decade he alternated tiny roles in police series with a side business: buying run-down houses with his partner Kristoffer Winters, fixing them up hammer in hand and selling them for triple their purchase price.

The brick job paid the bills when nobody was calling him to shoot.

From the Milwaukee Butcher to the Iraqi Desert

In 2002 he accepted the lead role in the independent film Dahmer for an almost token fee. Playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer required him to lose weight and live in a filthy apartment during sixteen suffocating shooting days. The film barely grossed 140,000 dollars at the box office. But Kathryn Bigelow saw that performance and kept his phone number in a drawer for four years.

Bigelow called him in 2007 to offer him the role of Sergeant William James in The Hurt Locker. The shoot took place in Jordan in temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with a bomb disposal suit weighing nearly 90 pounds and no technical comforts for the cast.

The production cost eleven million dollars, and the film went on to win six Oscars at the 2010 ceremony. Renner earned his first nomination for Best Actor, losing the statuette to Jeff Bridges.

Ben Affleck signed him that same year for The Town, where he played a violent Boston thief addicted to conflict. That performance earned him his second consecutive Academy Award nomination, this time in the Best Supporting Actor category.

And the studio machine put him on the radar right away.

The False Handoff of the Million-Dollar Franchises

In 2011 Paramount executives tried to use him as the replacement face for their biggest franchises. They introduced him in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol so that his character would take the lead in case Tom Cruise wanted to step away from the risky scenes. Shortly after, Universal entrusted him with The Bourne Legacy in 2012 to carry the franchise forward after Matt Damon left.

None of those transitions played out as planned. Cruise reaffirmed his absolute control over his character, and Matt Damon returned to the franchise in 2016. So Renner found his financial stability at the rival studio.

Marvel Studios signed him to play the archer Clint Barton. He made a brief, uncredited appearance in Thor in 2011 before joining the main cast of The Avengers in 2012, where he secured a guaranteed contract for six big-budget films.

He worked more out of discipline than ego.

He agreed to be the powerless member of the team for almost a decade, appearing in Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, before leading the series Hawkeye in 2021. But he didn't abandon arthouse cinema. He shared the screen with Amy Adams in Arrival in 2016 under the direction of Denis Villeneuve, and in 2017 he headlined the crime drama Wind River alongside Elizabeth Olsen.

Seven Tons of Snow and Titanium

In 2021 Taylor Sheridan handed him the lead role in Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount+. His character was a badge-less mediator who put out fires between inmates, guards and local mobs.

On January 1, 2023, a snowplow weighing more than six tons ran him over near his ranch in Nevada while he was trying to protect his nephew from a fatal impact. The hospital report recorded more than thirty broken bones, a rib that pierced his liver and the collapse of his right lung.

Nobody expected him to step back on set so soon.

Because he spent months confined to an orthopedic bed, learning to move his lower joints with metal prosthetics built into his rib cage and legs. In 2024 he returned to the recording studios in Pittsburgh to shoot all ten episodes of the third season of Mayor of Kingstown, fitting his work days around physical muscle rehabilitation breaks.

In 2025 Rian Johnson premiered Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, a production in which Renner spent four weeks filming at the London studios playing a doctor in a feature whose total production and Netflix rights budget came to roughly 210 million dollars.

Quotes by Jeremy Renner

  • The movie business is very difficult but the music business is just impossible. So I'll play in bands and record and play songs with other people, but for me it's a form of expression that all I need is me. I don't need cameras or agents, I can just have a piano and sing and feel totally verified.
  • I like to stay busy, I like to stay focused, and I like to stay creative. Without being creative I'd be dead.
  • Grab love of life every day. Because we're all gonna die. It's difficult to live that way. Most people are afraid to. Or can't. I find it very difficult.
  • Our friendship has remained all that time, and I'm godfather to his kids, but then when The Hurt Locker came around, I just knew there was a lot of opportunity that was coming in, and just couldn't really manifest any opportunities because things were busy.
  • I want my personal life to be personal... And I don't care if you're talking about things that are true, you're still talking about my personal life.
  • I like to play unpredictable characters, and I like to be unpredictable in what movie I'll do. I want to skip to work. I don't want to repeat anything. What the future holds, I don't know, but that's what I like. I'll take any risk there is.
