The Risk of Being the Stunt Double of Jim Carrey

Eric Christian Olsen landed in Hollywood with the label of athletic blond stuck to his forehead. In 2001 he appeared in Not Another Teen Movie and seemed doomed to keep playing the wisecracking sidekick in high school comedies. But in 2003 he made a decision that nearly derailed his career before it truly began. He agreed to play a young Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.

Critics were merciless toward the prequel. Specialized outlets ignored Olsen's physical effort to mimic Carrey's gestures and focused instead on the emptiness of the script. It seemed like the end of the road for a guy from Oregon who had studied Communications at Pepperdine University. However, the actor chose to step away from the spotlight for a while to recalibrate his public image.

Nobody gave him a chance.

He appeared in minor projects and short-lived series such as The Loop in 2006. That stretch in the wilderness taught him that the industry rewards consistency over momentary fame. In 2009 he appeared in Community as Vaughan, a character who poked fun at his own physique and helped him regain some credibility in television comedy.

The Security of a Badge in Los Angeles

In 2010, Olsen's professional life took a decisive turn. He joined the first season of NCIS: Los Angeles to play Detective Marty Deeks. What started as a recurring role became the emotional backbone of the series for thirteen years. Audiences connected with the mix of irreverent humor and vulnerability the actor brought to the character.

And the gamble paid off.

During the filming of the series, Olsen developed an unusual working dynamic. His older brother, David Paul Olsen, worked as his stunt double in the most dangerous scenes. This family collaboration became even stranger for the tabloid press when David married Daniela Ruah, the actress who played Eric's love interest on screen. The set became his main world during 323 episodes filmed until the production wrapped.

The actor stopped being just a pretty face.

Unlike other cast members, Olsen didn't just cash his weekly paycheck. He made use of the long waits in trailers to study how the business works from the other side of the camera. In 2014, he founded Cloud Nine Productions with the goal of creating his own content and not relying solely on calls from his agent. His first major sale was a medical drama that he managed to place with CBS.

The Office Takes the Place of the Set

In 2023, the series that gave him financial stability came to an end. Many actors in his position would have immediately sought another lead role to stay relevant. But Olsen chose to focus on his work as an executive producer. Under his Cloud Nine Productions banner, he began developing projects that moved away from the classic procedural formula that made him famous.

One of his most talked-about moves in the industry was producing the reboot of Matlock in 2024. For this project, he managed to sign Kathy Bates and deliver a much sharper tone than the original version from the 1980s. Olsen oversaw every detail of the pilot and got involved in choosing the crew to ensure a modern look. But his work didn't stop at legal drama, and he also explored the lifestyle documentary format.

In 2024, the network CBS confirmed the renewal of his production deals after strong ratings for the premiere of his new content. Eric Christian Olsen keeps his residence in Ventura County, where he manages his real estate investments and his wellness companies. The syndication deal from his years on television guarantees him annual passive income of more than two million dollars net.
