In 2010, Erin Moriarty went from being an anonymous teenager in New York to joining the cast of One Life to Live. She was only sixteen years old. That experience in the American soap opera format taught her that the job required more physical endurance than divine inspiration. There were no red carpets or grand speeches at the start.
She moved to Los Angeles shortly after finishing high school because the East Coast market felt too small for her. In 2012 she landed a supporting role in the comedy The Watch. She worked alongside Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill, but the film didn't perform at the box office. Still, that setback didn't slow her audition pace in an industry looking for faces that blend fragility and toughness.
Her luck changed in 2014 with the first season of True Detective.
She played Audrey Hart (the daughter of Woody Harrelson's character) in one of the most acclaimed productions on cable television. She didn't need many lines of dialogue to convey the chaos of a young woman lost in a broken family environment. That brief appearance on HBO opened the doors to Marvel and Netflix a year later. In 2015 she stepped into the role of Hope Shlottman in Jessica Jones, and her name started circulating in the offices of the industry's top casting directors.
Before making big action productions, Erin Moriarty turned to independent film. In 2016 she starred in Blood Father alongside Mel Gibson. Filming in the deserts of New Mexico was tough and demanding. She played a daughter hunted by a cartel who seeks the protection of her father (a recovering alcoholic ex-convict).
Critics noticed her ability to hold her own against a Hollywood veteran in a slump. She made her character more than a simple damsel in distress and brought a necessary dryness to the story. That same year she appeared in Captain Fantastic, where she shared the cast with Viggo Mortensen. It was a period of constant technical learning, far from digital effects.
And the effort paid off.
Despite good reviews on the festival circuit, many of these films had limited distribution in Spain. Moriarty wasn't chasing instant fame on social media. She preferred to focus on characters with real inner conflicts. In 2018 she filmed The Miracle Season and Monster Party, showing she could jump from sports drama to psychological horror without breaking a sweat.
The year 2019 permanently changed her career when The Boys premiered on Prime Video. Her role as Annie January (Starlight) placed her at the center of a brutal satire about power and marketing. Her initial contract tied her to one of the most profitable franchises in streaming television. The series demanded a physical and mental transformation to expose the corruption of the American Dream.
But her massive success brought fierce public scrutiny. In 2024, Moriarty had to face sexist comments and criticism of her physical appearance on social media. The situation got so bad that she decided to step away from social media temporarily after a public clash with journalist Megyn Kelly. It was a bitter lesson about the price of constant exposure in the age of the algorithm.
She decided to respond with hard work.
In 2023 she starred in the psychological thriller Catching Dust, filmed in the arid lands of Texas. The film explores isolation and violence in a couple living in a trailer. For 2025, she has the release of The Haunting of Helen's Bridge scheduled, directed by Stephen Cognetti. The production had a tight budget and focused on atmospheric suspense shot on location in North Carolina.
