Evangeline Lilly was walking through the streets of Kelowna when a Ford Models agent stopped her. She had no interest in acting. At the time, she worked as a flight attendant for Royal Airlines, and her priority was to fund her studies at the University of British Columbia.
But money came first. She accepted some commercials and small uncredited roles until her audition for Lost came up in 2004. J.J. Abrams saw in her the mix of toughness and vulnerability needed to play Kate Austen.
There was a major logistical problem. As a Canadian citizen, she did not have the work permit needed to film in the United States. The production came close to casting another actress after twenty failed attempts to secure the legal paperwork.
The paperwork arrived one day before filming began in Hawaii.
For six seasons the show was a phenomenon that consumed the privacy of its entire cast. Lilly never felt comfortable with mass fame. Her goal was always to use film as a means to pursue her humanitarian work, not as an end in itself.
After the series ended in 2010, the actress tried to step away from the spotlight. She wrote children's books such as The Squickerwonkers and focused on her family. But Peter Jackson called her to join the The Hobbit trilogy.
She accepted the challenge with one clear contract condition: no love triangle. In 2013, she made her debut as Tauriel in The Desolation of Smaug and found that the script had changed during the additional shoots.
The producers imposed the romance storyline with Legolas and Kili despite her initial complaints. Critics were harsh about her character for not being part of Tolkien's canon. So Lilly turned to writing again until Marvel came knocking.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, Ant-Man hit theaters. Her role as Hope van Dyne was supporting but essential to the hero's storyline. Three years later, in 2018, she shared top billing in Ant-Man and the Wasp (it was the first time a woman appeared in the title of a film from this studio).
Her run in superhero movies brought a long storyline to a close. She appeared in Avengers: Endgame in 2019 and returned for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2023. Filming the latter was complicated by the logistical restrictions of the time.
In June 2024, she posted a video originally recorded in 2006. In the footage, a young Lilly explained that her dream was to retire from acting after ten years to start a family and devote herself to writing.
She kept her word almost two decades later.
There were no grand press releases. She simply chose to stop accepting scripts and focus on her charity work and her career as an author. Her last on-screen appearance is in the closing chapter of the trilogy directed by Peyton Reed.
Her contract with Marvel Studios ended after the film's global promotion in February 2023.
