Hannah Gross was born in 1990 surrounded by scripts and rehearsals in Toronto. The daughter of Paul Gross and Martha Burns, theater was the living room of her home before it became her profession. But her move to New York to study at New York University (NYU) was not a family formality. She was looking for an identity of her own, away from the weight of her last name in Canada's industry.
In 2013, she made her big-screen debut in I Used to Be Darker, and American independent cinema embraced her right away. Her face fit that aesthetic of gritty realism and long silences. She didn't need grand gestures to convey a razor-sharp vulnerability. Because Gross understands that in film, less is often more.
She never wanted to be a star.
During those early years, she took part in short films and experimental projects that barely reached commercial release. But that period was essential in shaping a technique that shuns overacting. In 2014, she worked on Christmas, Again and confirmed that her place was in stories unfolding on the margins of big cities.
In 2017, David Fincher called her to play Debbie Mitford in the series Mindhunter. It was the moment general audiences learned who this actress with the icy gaze really was. Netflix's production demanded pinpoint precision and an intellectual coolness that Gross handled without blinking. Playing the girlfriend of an FBI agent who studies serial killers was no simple role.
And the bet paid off because her chemistry with Jonathan Groff broke the usual mold of TV couples. Her character was not a simple emotional support but a cynical, brilliant counterpoint. Yet after the series' massive success, she did not seek refuge in superhero blockbusters. She preferred to keep exploring complicated characters in low-budget films.
Silence is her greatest tool.
In 2018, she joined the cast of the second season of The Sinner to play Marin. It was another exercise in restraint within a plot loaded with trauma and family secrets. Gross showed she could carry the weight of a suspense narrative without losing her naturalness. Her name soon started coming up in the offices of the most demanding casting directors on the East Coast.
In 2019, she appeared in Joker as the young version of Penny Fleck. It was a brief role in terms of screen time, but vital to the psychological structure of Todd Phillips's film. A year later, in 2020, she worked under Viggo Mortensen in Falling. In this family drama, she played the protagonist's mother in the past-set scenes.
Her performance in Falling stood out for the warmth she brought to a story marked by hostility and mental decline. Gross shot her scenes in just a few days, yet her presence hangs over the entire film. Because she knows how to inhabit other characters' memories with astonishing naturalness.
In 2024, she shot The Adult under the direction of Dustin Guy Defa in New York City. The project kept a low profile during production to preserve the intimacy of the creative process. The film was shot on 16mm to achieve an organic visual texture far from digital polish. Post-production was completed at an independent studio in Brooklyn with a technical crew of fewer than twenty people.
