Iain Armitage uploaded his first video to YouTube at the age of four. He wasn't chasing empty views or viral challenges. He analyzed New York theater productions with a bow tie around his neck and a seriousness that unsettled industry veterans. That channel, titled Iain Loves Theatre, was the prelude to a career nobody saw coming.
This young Georgia native is the son of actor Euan Morton and producer Lee Armitage. Acting wasn't a distant option but everyday language at home. His grandfather was Richard Armitage, a senior official at the U.S. Department of State, but the boy preferred the spotlight to the offices in Washington.
In 2017, luck crossed paths with talent during the casting of Big Little Lies.
He played Ziggy Chapman and shared the set with actresses of the caliber of Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley. His ability to hold his own against established stars caught the attention of Chuck Lorre. The producer was looking for a child version of Sheldon Cooper and found in Armitage someone capable of replicating the quirks of Jim Parsons without falling into parody.
But the challenge was enormous.
The series Young Sheldon premiered in 2017 with an audience of more than 17 million viewers in the United States. His initial contract guaranteed a salary that increased each season. By the third season of the series, the actor was earning 32,500 dollars per episode filmed.
Shooting a sitcom for seven years wears down any adult. Armitage kept a strict work pace while staying connected to theater as an occasional viewer and critic. He never gave up his video reviews because that space was his connection to reality outside the Warner Bros. studios.
And that saved his mental health.
In 2020, he gave his voice to the character of Shaggy in the movie Scoob!, and in 2021 he led the voice cast of PAW Patrol: The Movie. These voice roles let him diversify his income without constant on-screen exposure. But his image was still tied to the Texan genius who corrected everyone on television.
Filming for the seventh and final season of Young Sheldon wrapped in May 2024. Armitage closed the chapter on 141 episodes after spending nearly his entire childhood and adolescence on the same set. Syndication data shows the series will keep generating residual income for decades to come.
There were no extravagant parties or erratic behavior after the end of the project. The actor focused on one-off appearances, such as his role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His vegan lifestyle and passion for professional magic keep him away from the usual circuit of young Los Angeles celebrities.
Because he prefers bow ties to scandal.
His main residence is still in Virginia, and trips to London to see theater are a constant on his schedule. In 2024, the executive producer of his main series confirmed that the final budget per episode exceeded 2 million dollars due to the upkeep costs of the original cast.
