Jessica Stroup landed in California with suitcases full of teenage ambition and an offer to work as a model. She was only 17 years old. But her real goal wasn't the runways but the TV auditions held at the studios in Burbank.
Her first jobs were low-key. She appeared in national commercials and small roles in TV series that few people remember today.
In 2005, she landed a role in the TV movie Vampire Bats. It wasn't a critical success. But it caught the attention of casting directors with her sharp blue gaze, which would later shine in horror.
And the industry came knocking.
Her big break came with the revival of a '90s TV icon. In 2008, Stroup became Erin Silver in the relaunch of 90210. It was a risky bet by The CW to attract a new generation of viewers who didn't know the original series.
For five seasons and 114 episodes Jessica Stroup lived inside a bubble of instant fame. The salary per episode exceeded 15,000 dollars in the early stages of production. This financial stability allowed her to choose independent film projects during the show's filming breaks.
But typecasting loomed.
While she was filming the teen drama, she appeared in movies such as The Hills Have Eyes 2 and the remake of Prom Night. In 2008, these productions did well at the box office despite bad reviews from the specialized press. Audiences saw her as the perfect victim or the unexpected villain.
When the series about wealthy teens ended in 2013, many thought her career would fade away completely. It didn't. In 2014, she joined the cast of The Following as Agent Max Hardy.
Working alongside Kevin Bacon meant a complete change of gear. The tone was dark and the violence was explicit in every episode. So she had to drop the habits of dramatic comedy to survive on a set where suspense set the pace of the work.
In 2017, she made the leap into the Marvel universe with the series Iron Fist. She played Joy Meachum for two seasons until the platform canceled the project in 2018. It was a bittersweet experience due to the mixed reception the story received from comic book fans.
But the check had been signed.
After the superhero chapter came to an end, Stroup decided to space out her screen appearances. In 2019, she took part in the feature film Freedom’s Path and focused on raising awareness about skin cancer after her father's personal experience. This public side of her career kept her out of the Hollywood spotlight for several months.
In 2023, her participation in the fiction podcast The Shadow over Innsmouth was confirmed. The recording took place in sound studios in Los Angeles under the direction of Julian Simpson. It is a modern adaptation of Lovecraft's stories where the voice is the only dramatic tool available.
The distribution contract for this last project included exclusivity clauses for digital platforms in the United States.
