New York, 1995. Larry Clark was casting real kids for a film that would shock half the planet. Jon Abrahams was there and ended up joining the cast of Kids. He had no formal training, but his presence fit the gritty, raw aesthetic of the Lower East Side.
That debut was no accident.
Shortly after, he appeared in Dead Man Walking under the direction of Tim Robbins. It was a change of pace that let him work alongside Susan Sarandon. But the general public would not remember him for the social drama, but for his ability to hold his own in raunchy comedy.
In 2000, the phenomenon of Scary Movie arrived. He played Bobby Prinze in a film that grossed more than $270 million worldwide. That parody of teen horror movies gave him a level of visibility that few actors of his profile manage to reach.
That same season, Meet the Parents hit theaters. He played Denny Byrnes, the son who secretly smokes marijuana behind Robert De Niro's back. It's funny that many people still associate him with that role of the eternal troubled teen.
And the phone wouldn't stop ringing.
He worked on House of Wax in 2005 alongside Paris Hilton and Elisha Cuthbert. It was a conventional horror production that did well at the box office with 70 million dollars in ticket sales, although critics showed no mercy toward it. Abrahams did his job without making a fuss.
As roles in major studio films began to dry up, he decided to take control of his own projects. He did not want to wait for his agent to call him about some irrelevant supporting part. In 2016, he directed his first feature film, titled All At Once.
It was a personal bet shot on a tight budget.
He returned to directing with Clover in 2020. In this film he also took a leading role and cast Ron Perlman in the ensemble. It is a thriller with dark comedy touches that moves away from the blockbusters that made him famous early in his career.
But he never gave up acting for other directors. In 2022, he appeared in The Walk, a drama set against the racial tensions of Boston in the 1970s. His acting style has become drier and more restrained over time.
In 2023, he joined the cast of The Dirty South, a modern Western shot in Louisiana. Filming was completed in three weeks, using natural light for most of its scenes.
