Quentin Tarantino was watching television when he noticed a little girl appearing in a mediocre sitcom. That girl was Julia Butters, and the director of Pulp Fiction decided she had to be in his ninth film. There were no endless casting sessions or last-minute doubts, because Tarantino wrote the role of Trudi Fraser with her specifically in mind.
On the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019, the young actress asked that no one treat her like a child. She came with her script heavily underlined and didn't let her parents read lines with her so as not to contaminate her performance. Leonardo DiCaprio later confessed that working with her was like sharing a scene with a seasoned professional with decades of experience.
The gamble paid off.
During the filming of the dressing room scene, Butters improvised part of her dialogue to add more weight to the character. That confidence earned her the respect of the industry in Los Angeles and a Critics Choice Awards nomination at just ten years old. But the road to that leather couch next to Rick Dalton was not a one-day coincidence.
Before Hollywood knew her name, Butters had already logged countless hours in front of the cameras. She started at age two in commercials and soon moved on to recurring roles in TV series such as Criminal Minds. Her father is a Disney animator, which taught her from a very young age that filmmaking is an industry built on technical precision.
In 2016, she landed the role of Anna-Kat Otto in the series American Housewife. She spent four seasons there honing a comedic rhythm that would later help her hold her own alongside major names on screen. But television was too limiting for her, and her team decided it was time to pursue projects with more narrative risk in independent film and big-budget productions.
Then came big-budget action cinema.
In 2022, she appeared in The Gray Man for Netflix, sharing the screen with Ryan Gosling. It was a physically demanding shoot in which she had to learn to move through chase sequences filmed in Prague. The film's production budget exceeded $200 million, marking her definitive entry into the world of major global studio blockbusters.
After working with Tarantino, the next logical step was Steven Spielberg. In 2022, she played Anne Fabelman in The Fabelmans, bringing a restrained presence to the film's family dynamic. Spielberg was looking for faces that didn't look like they came from a contemporary modeling agency, and Butters fit the classic 1950s aesthetic the script demanded.
Her ability to hold close-ups without blinking caught critics' attention at the Toronto Film Festival. Butters doesn't rely on childish mannerisms or constantly seek the camera's approval. She simply stays present in the scene, and that is something very few actors of her generation manage to sustain consistently.
In 2024, she was announced as part of the cast of the sequel to Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Filming was scheduled for the summer months in Los Angeles under the direction of Nisha Ganatra. The film set its release date for 2025, with a production budget fully managed by Disney and a distribution plan covering more than 3,000 theaters.
