Juliana Canfield didn't need to shout for the audience to notice her. In 2018, she joined the cast of Succession as Jess Jordan, Kendall Roy's personal assistant, and what seemed like a supporting role turned out to be a lesson in physical acting. Her job was to be there without fully being there.
And silence became her greatest weapon.
On the HBO series, Canfield handled timing with almost surgical precision. She didn't have big monologues, but her face conveyed the moral collapse of a billionaire family better than any expository dialogue. On that set, improvisation was constant, and she knew how to find gaps where others only saw pauses.
Before stepping onto television sets, she trained at the Yale School of Drama. In 2017, she earned her master's degree in Fine Arts after years of technical training that allowed her to master stage performance before becoming a household name. That academic foundation explains her physical control in front of the camera.
But theater was never a backup plan for her.
In 2023, Canfield joined the original cast of Stereophonic, a play written by David Adjmi that recreates the tensions of a rock band in a recording studio during the 1970s. Her role as Holly required her not only to act but also to sing and play instruments live every night. The technical demands of the production were so high that the actors spent months rehearsing as if they were a real band.
The commitment to extreme realism paid off.
In 2024, the play moved to Broadway and swept the Tony Award nominations. For Canfield, it marked the definitive recognition from the New York industry outside the umbrella of streaming platforms. Her name went from being the familiar face of television to that of an actress capable of carrying a three-hour theatrical production.
In 2022, she starred in the series The Calling under David E. Kelley's direction. There she played Detective Janine Harris, a character completely removed from the professional submissiveness she had shown in her earlier work. It was a necessary change of pace to keep typecasting from limiting her career options in the American industry.
Her film work has also followed a very specific path of independent projects. In 2024, she appeared in Between the Temples, a neurotic comedy in which she shared the screen with Jason Schwartzman. Canfield chooses her scripts for the weight of the story, not the size of the budget.
In 2024, the production of Stereophonic at the Golden Theatre in New York extended its run through August due to high ticket demand.
