The Erasure of a Surname

Kelsey Asbille Chow decided to shorten her stage name just before director Taylor Sheridan cast her in Wind River in 2017. It was a strategic move aimed at simplifying her profile in an industry that often typecasts actors by their roots. That film about a Native American reservation in Wyoming permanently changed the course of her career.

She played a young snow-covered victim, which linked her to stories of rural America. But before the icy dramas and tense silences, there was Disney. Between 2010 and 2013, she starred in Pair of Kings on Disney XD, a stint of light comedies and kids' audiences that has little to do with her adult work.

The industry took notice.

Her time in teen television also included appearances on One Tree Hill and Teen Wolf. During those years her presence was constant but low-key. She worked regularly while studying at Columbia University, balancing shoots with an academic education meant to give her a solid foundation away from the spotlight of Los Angeles.

The Shadow of Controversy

Her identity became a subject of public debate when she landed the role of Monica Dutton in Yellowstone in 2018. She claimed to have Eastern Band Cherokee roots through her mother's family. But the community itself issued a statement clarifying that she was not listed in its official records and that it had no record of her lineage.

This identity conflict did not slow her rise in cable television. In Sheridan's series she plays a Native teacher married to the son of a powerful rancher. The show drew massive audiences in the United States and placed her at the center of American pop culture for several seasons.

That marked the end of a stage of anonymity.

In 2020 she took part in the fourth season of Fargo under Noah Hawley's direction. There she brought Swanee Capps to life and explored a much darker, more cynical tone. Her ability to hold a gaze in long takes became a key tool for directors seeking tension without explanatory dialogue.

The Leap into Physical Horror

Filmmaker Sam Raimi spotted her to produce Don’t Move in 2024. In this survival thriller she plays a woman who must escape a killer after being injected with a paralyzing agent. The script demanded extreme physical effort because for most of the film her character can neither speak nor make broad movements.

She had to shoot complex scenes in natural settings where her expressiveness was limited to her eyes alone. So the weight of the film rested on her ability to convey pure terror without using her voice. It was a high-risk bet that moved her decisively away from supporting roles in major television productions.

Filming for the movie took place entirely on location in Bulgaria during the summer of 2023 on a low-budget B-movie production budget.
