The Art of Being the Invisible Supporting Actor

Kevin Corrigan looks like he's seen something he shouldn't have. He's that guy in the background of a Scorsese scene who, without saying a word, has already told you half the movie about New York's underworld. His face blends chronic weariness with Bronx street smarts, which fits perfectly into any alley in Manhattan.

In 1989, he made his debut in Lost Angels after training at the Lee Strasberg Institute. He wasn't interested in being the leading man of the moment, since his look called for characters with rough edges, jittery guys, or friends with secrets.

The industry labeled him right away.

In 1990, he made a brief appearance in Goodfellas as Henry Hill's brother. It was a small role, but it got casting directors to note him for tough or troubled guys. And that's how he began building a filmography that now exceeds one hundred fifty titles across film and television.

But his real breakthrough came in the independent circuit of the 1990s. In 1995, he took part in Living in Oblivion, a satire about low-budget filmmaking that is now a handbook for film students. Corrigan played the camera assistant, a role he delivered with a dry comedic edge that is very hard to replicate.

A year later, he starred in Walking and Talking alongside Catherine Keener. In this film, he showed he could carry the emotional weight of a story without relying on tricks. His style is built on economy of gestures and a voice that always seems about to crack or fire off a sarcastic remark.

The New York connection and the jump to television

In 2001, he took on the role of Eddie Finnerty in the comedy Grounded for Life. He stayed with the series until 2005, and it gave him a financial security that independent film rarely offers. But money didn't pull him away from his creative roots.

But the money was in television.

In 2006, he worked with Martin Scorsese again in The Departed. He played Leonardo DiCaprio's crooked cousin, and his presence brought the grit needed in a story about undercover cops and betrayal. It's interesting that, despite working on blockbusters, he has never lost that cult-actor aura of someone who thrives on the margins.

In 2008, he appeared in Pineapple Express. Here he explored his most outrageous side alongside the new wave of American comedy (produced by Judd Apatow). His ability to adapt to different registers without losing his essence is what has allowed him to survive three decades of change in Hollywood.

Many viewers associate him with dark or small-time criminal roles. But in 2010, he showed a different side in Fringe, where he played Sam Weiss, a mysterious character who held information about the end of the world.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2015, he shot Results under director Andrew Bujalski. In the film he plays a newly divorced millionaire who doesn't know what to do with his life or his body. It is one of his few leading roles, and in it he shows a physical vulnerability that is usually hidden behind his tough Bronx guy image.

In 2020, he appeared in The King of Staten Island, reconnecting with the kind of film that blends humor with everyday drama. His scene is brief but essential for understanding the main character's surroundings.

In 2023, he played Joe Valachi in the series Godfather of Harlem under a per-episode contract. The show was filmed mostly on location in New York to keep set costs down.
