Lara Pulver didn't ask for permission to enter the collective imagination. She appeared nude on a sofa on Baker Street in 2012, and for a moment the world stopped watching Benedict Cumberbatch. That role as Irene Adler in Sherlock could have been a deadly trap for her career, but she had already done her homework on the West End stages.
The British actress was born in 1980 in Southend-on-Sea and grew up far from the spotlight of London. In 1997, she began her training at the National Youth Music Theatre. There she learned that technique is the only safety net when the lights are hot and critics expect the slightest mistake.
And the risk was worth it.
In 2012, she played the woman who outwitted the world's most famous detective under the direction of Steven Moffat. That appearance drew hundreds of complaints to the BBC over its suggested full nudity. But Pulver defended her work as a display of female power rather than simple aesthetic objectification.
Before moving into international television, Pulver honed her craft in musical theater. In 2008, she received a nomination for the Olivier Award for her role as Lucille Frank in Parade. The production played at the Donmar Warehouse and helped prove that her voice was as powerful as her stage presence.
The industry doesn't always forgive total exposure.
In 2009, she signed on to the series Robin Hood to play Isabella. It was her first real experience with big-budget period productions. But London felt too small for her, so she decided to try her luck across the Atlantic to broaden her range as an actress.
After her time on British television, she decided she didn't want to be typecast in supporting roles. So she took the role of Claudine in True Blood for 2010. That foray into fantasy opened the doors of the American market for her once and for all.
In 2013, she joined the cast of Da Vinci's Demons to bring Clarice Orsini to life. For three seasons, she maintained a delicate balance between political intrigue and historical drama. Because competition in Los Angeles is fierce, Pulver managed to keep her British essence without missing out on commercial opportunities.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2016, she appeared in Underworld: Blood Wars, playing Semira. It was a shift toward pure action that gave her the chance to work with digital effects and complex fight choreography. But her real strength still lay in sharp dialogue and characters with a hidden side.
In 2021, she lent her voice to the animated series Pantheon and took part in the legal drama The Split. In 2023, she starred in the medical series Maternal, playing Dr. Catherine MacDiarmid alongside Parminder Nagra. The show explored the difficulties mothers face when returning to the healthcare service after maternity leave.
ITV canceled the series Maternal in 2023 after airing only six episodes due to low ratings.
