The pragmatism of the Canadian scene

Leanne Lapp didn't need a major scandal or a leading role in a summer blockbuster to become a familiar face across half the world. Born in Vancouver, she grew up in a city that works as a giant film set for the American industry. There she learned early on that acting is, above all else, a job built on endurance.

Her training in improv and classical theater gave her a technical foundation that many actors of her generation overlook. She started with small parts in series that are now nostalgia favorites. In 2010, she appeared in The Troop and shortly after in the American version of The Killing. There were no fireworks, but a steady stream of contracts.

The industry doesn't always reward the best; it rewards whoever gets to the set first with the lines memorized.

That was her strategy during her first years in the profession. But the real shift came when casting directors at The CW took notice of her. In an industry that chews through new faces every week, Lapp managed to stay afloat thanks to a rare ability to move from procedural drama to dark comedy without the viewer noticing the seams.

The villain's daughter on the set of iZombie

In 2015, she played Gilda on iZombie, a role that let her explore a much darker register. She was the daughter of Vaughn Du Clark, the main antagonist of the second season. Her performance avoided the cliché of the evil heiress. Lapp chose to give the character a bureaucratic coldness that was far more unsettling than any scream or threat.

Working on a cult series gave her a visibility that had previously eluded her. But Canadian television is a niche market. So after her time in the world of the living dead, she decided to diversify her efforts. In 2016, she appeared in The Magicians, and a year later she showed up in Continuum, proving that fantasy was her natural habitat during that stage.

And the audience responded with unexpected loyalty.

Lapp never chased the fame of magazine covers. She preferred the steady paycheck of productions shot in three weeks and aired on specialty channels. Her appearances in Supernatural or The 100 confirm that she is one of those actresses directors call when they need reliable performances under pressure.

The artificial snow market

Starting in 2020, her career took a very specific direction toward made-for-TV romance and Christmas movies. For many actors this would be a comfortable retirement, but for her it was a way to secure a massive on-screen presence. In 2020, she shot The Christmas Waltz, and in 2021 she appeared in Five More Minutes.

These productions are often shot on tight budgets and schedules that leave no room for error. Lapp adapted to the system with astonishing ease. In 2022 she starred in The Presence of Love and also The Secrets of Bella Vista, two titles that perform very well in the international cable TV market. Her name guarantees a minimum audience in countries like Spain, where this kind of afternoon movie leads the early-evening slots.

Sometimes success simply means never stopping work.

In 2023 she shot the movie A Christmas Plus One under director Meeshelle Neal. Filming took place on location in British Columbia with a small crew. In 2024 the actress was living in Vancouver, balancing dubbing sessions with writing new scripts for Hallmark's winter season.
