Lee Hye-young was born in Seoul in 1962 under the shadow of a giant. Her father was Lee Man-hee, the director who defined Korean cinema of the 1960s before dying prematurely. She was barely thirteen years old when he passed away.
That absence shaped the way she looks into the camera.
In 1981, she made her stage debut in The Merchant of Venice. She wasn't chasing the easy applause of the TV comedies that were beginning to sprout across South Korea at the time. She wanted the discipline of the stage. That's why her leap to the screen in 1983 with Kim Mari was such a shock to an industry that was looking for submissive faces.
Throughout the 1980s she took on projects that challenged censorship and conservative tastes. In 1986 she shot Winter Wanderer and shortly after Ticket. These were roles for women who didn't apologize for existing.
In 1988, she won the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress for her work in The Success Story. That award confirmed that the Lee surname was no longer a burden but a driving force of her own. Yet despite the media noise, she chose to step away from the spotlight for nearly a decade.
For years, she focused on theater and occasional TV appearances. Many believed she had retired from arthouse cinema for good. But the truth is that Lee Hye-young never stopped working; she simply chose carefully where to put her energy.
In 2004, she appeared in Low Life directed by Im Kwon-taek. It was a return to the roots of raw cinema. But the real change of pace came much later.
It was a return to her essence.
In 2021, director Hong Sang-soo called her to star in In Front of Your Face. She plays an actress who returns to Korea with a secret hidden beneath her skin. They shot the film in just a few days and without a prior script. Critics at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival praised her ability to hold extremely long takes without relying on a single acting trick.
In 2022, she reunited with Hong in The Novelist's Film. Here, black and white stripped bare her sixty-year-old face, with no filters or industrial makeup. The film won the Jury Grand Prix at the Berlinale, confirming her as the cornerstone of a cinema that despises artifice.
Her style has no use for frills. In 2022 she also shot Walk Up, in which she plays a woman who manages an apartment building in Seoul. The naturalness with which she drinks wine and smokes in front of the camera breaks with the polished aesthetic of modern Korean productions.
Her bet on minimalist cinema paid off.
In 2024 she appeared in A Traveler’s Needs alongside French actress Isabelle Huppert. The production cost a fraction of what any streaming series spends. Filming wrapped in less than two weeks, and it premiered in the official selection of the Berlin International Film Festival.
The film was shot with a simple digital camera and a production crew of fewer than five people.
