Linden Ashby didn't land in Hollywood looking for fights, but he ended up knocking heads on a desert island. In 1995, his face decorated the folders of thousands of teenagers who were crazy about martial arts and early digital effects. He played Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat after years of auditioning for minor roles in TV series that nobody remembers today.
That was his moment of glory.
Many action actors burn out fast when box office numbers drop below one hundred million. Ashby preferred the security of television and supporting roles where he could age with dignity. Born in Atlantic Beach, Florida, he studied psychology at Fort Lewis College before becoming an actor because he was interested in understanding why people do what they do.
In 1983, he moved to New York to study acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse. There he met Susan Walters, his wife since 1986, with whom he has shared screen credits several times. His marriage's stability is a statistical anomaly in the film industry and has been the anchor that helped him get through the lean years without work.
In 1997, he joined Melrose Place to play Brett Cooper, and that's when he understood that real money was in weekly productions. He wasn't chasing an Oscar. He wanted steady work and to pay the bills on his home in Los Angeles without depending on a studio greenlighting a blockbuster.
The industry is cruel to those who only know how to throw kicks.
That's why he focused on roles involving uniforms or complicated family problems. In 2011, he accepted the role of Sheriff Noah Stilinski in Teen Wolf. What seemed like filler work for a show about teenage werewolves lasted one hundred episodes and six full seasons. His per-episode salary rose in step with the show's popularity on social media.
Ashby never stopped working, not even for a single winter. In 2020, he appeared in the movie Escaping My Stalker, and a year later he showed up in Trust. These weren't projects built to win awards at Cannes, but they kept his name on casting directors' production sheets.
In 2022, he appeared in Purple Hearts, a production for digital platforms that racked up millions of viewing hours in its first week. He wasn't the lead, but his presence added weight to a storyline that needed seasoned talent. Ashby knows his current value lies in the mix of nostalgia and authority his face conveys.
He returned to the Beacon Hills universe in 2023.
He reprised his role as the sheriff in Teen Wolf: The Movie because fans demanded it at every convention he attended. Filming took place in Georgia under pretty harsh weather conditions for a crew that was no longer in their twenties. The movie had an estimated budget of 10 million dollars and helped wrap up storylines that had been open since 2017.
In 2025, his production schedule included appearances in independent projects looking for distribution in international markets. He still practices martial arts privately and keeps his private pilot's license so he can get between his properties. The original Mortal Kombat grossed 122 million dollars worldwide.
