Maki Kawase started her career in 2015 without making much noise. She didn't come from an elite school or have connections in the anime industry. She joined the Arts Vision agency after passing the standard auditions and spent her early years voicing supporting characters in productions few people remember.
In 2015, she made her debut with minor roles in series where she barely had a line or two per episode. But her persistence in the Tokyo recording studios paid off three years later. Her real break came in 2018 with Zombie Land Saga.
In 2018, her name jumped onto the main casting lists because she changed how sound directors saw her. She had to play Junko Konno, a idol from the 80s who returns to life as a zombie. The role demanded a mix of extreme shyness and a heart-wrenching vocal power in the musical scenes.
And there she used a singing technique that departed from the Japanese standard.
In 2020, she took on the challenge of starring in Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, voicing Yuna. It's a lighthearted series where the weight rests on her ability to hold viewers' attention for twenty minutes. But Kawase didn't want to limit herself to sweet characters.
The most obvious shift in her range came in 2021. In the series The Faraway Paladin, she played Will, a young male lead. Pulling off a believable boy's voice without slipping into parody is one of the real tests for any seiyuu in Japan.
Critics praised her restraint.
Between 2022 and 2023, she broadened her work across projects of very different genres. She appeared in Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story and also in Summer Time Rendering. In the latter, she played Tokiko Hishigata, a celebrity with dark undertones that required absolute restraint in the delivery of her dialogue.
Because Kawase prefers scripts where physical effort shows in her voice, in 2024 she worked on Ragna Crimson, playing Gren. It's a role where vocal aggression dominates every action sequence and demands far more diaphragm control than she had at the start of her career.
In 2025, she remains under contract with the Arts Vision agency. Her celebrity profile lists appearances in more than sixty productions across animation and video games. Her representation contract prohibits disclosing details about her per-episode fees.
