Marta Kober was not aiming to become a typical face of horror cinema when she auditioned for Friday the 13th Part 2. She was sixteen and had an expression that blended vulnerability with a toughness unusual for her age. That mix won over the producers of a franchise that was just taking its first steps.
By 1981, the slasher was a meat grinder that churned out fleeting faces. She played Cassie. Her time at Crystal Lake was marked by a contract controversy over her age and a nude scene that forced crews to rework several sequences in a hurry to avoid legal trouble.
It was the start of a frantic decade.
That shoot in Connecticut was not comfortable, thanks to the cold and the physical demands. But Kober made sure her character wasn't just another nameless victim. And that spark let her slip out of Jason Voorhees's clutches and into projects with directors who wanted more than screams on screen.
John Sayles cast her in Baby It's You in 1983. There she proved she could hold her own dramatically opposite Rosanna Arquette. But teen audiences of the era remember her most for Rad, the 1986 BMX film that is now an absolute cult classic.
In that production, she played Becky. It wasn't the lead role, but her presence gave real texture to a plot that at times bordered on the sports absurdity of the 1980s. That shoot in Calgary was one of the actress's biggest moments in the public eye.
And the bet paid off for a while.
That same year, she shot Neon Maniacs. It was a chaotic production where the monsters and makeup ate up the budget while the script fell apart with every take. Kober fulfilled her contract in a film that ended up as video store filler and bargain-bin fodder.
In the second half of the 1980s, she jumped from series to series. She appeared in Magnum, P.I. and The Slap Maxwell Story, looking for a foothold that film was beginning to deny her. The Los Angeles industry punishes quickly those who don't move up to the next level of stardom at the right moment.
The phone didn't ring as often anymore.
In 1992, her appearance in an episode of Law & Order showed a maturity as a performer that suggested a solid path in procedural drama. However, important roles began to dry up. The actress gradually stepped away from the spotlight, without issuing statements or seeking an official farewell in the specialized press.
In 1994 she appeared in the film The Innocent. It was one of her last credited roles before she disappeared from commercial circuits and from the fan conventions that tend to cash in on 1980s nostalgia. Marta Kober preferred anonymity to living off the royalties of a cursed summer camp.
The production budget of her most recent film appearance was under three million dollars.
