Rachel Meghan Markle grew up surrounded by cables and lights on the set of Married… with Children. Her father worked as a lighting director, and she spent her afternoons watching how TV fiction was built from the shadows. That early exposure to the technical side of the craft shaped an ambition that would take years to bear real fruit in front of the camera.
During the 2000s, she landed supporting roles on shows such as General Hospital and CSI: NY while working as a freelance calligrapher to pay the bills. Those were years of constant auditions and rejections for not fitting specific ethnic profiles, according to Los Angeles casting directors. That period of instability lasted nearly ten years before she landed a steady contract.
And then Rachel Zane appeared.
In 2011, she signed on for the series Suits and moved to Toronto. There she played an ambitious legal assistant for seven full seasons. The USA Network production gave her the financial stability she needed to launch The Tig, a lifestyle platform that shut down in 2017, shortly before her wedding.
That blog brought in income from advertising and collaborations, which already hinted at her interest in controlling her public image. But acting took a complete back seat when she joined the British royal family in 2018. That wedding in Windsor changed her contract with the public and permanently pulled her away from traditional Hollywood sets.
The film industry never gave her another chance as an actress.
In 2020, she and her husband decided to step away from their royal duties and move to California. That financial move aimed for total economic independence through creating their own audiovisual content. They founded Archewell Productions and signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix that same year.
The first major result of that partnership was the documentary series Harry & Meghan, released in 2022. The production broke audience records during its premiere week but also polarized specialist critics. The initial contract was estimated at $100 million for a content package that included documentaries and children's programs.
Not everything went smoothly in the production offices. In 2023, her deal with Spotify was confirmed to be canceled after just one season of the podcast Archetypes. The streaming industry began demanding more tangible results and less abstract concepts in its big-budget projects.
So her focus shifted toward niche entertainment.
In 2024, she filmed a series about cooking, friendship and gardening for Netflix at a private property in Montecito. The production coincided with the launch of her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard, focused on home products. Filming wrapped up in the second quarter of 2024 under the supervision of the production company Sony Pictures Television.
