Michael Bakari Jordan grew up in a house in Newark where movies weren't the main plan. His mother was a teacher and his father worked for a catering company. Young Jordan started out doing commercials for toy chains, but his life changed when David Simon cast him as Wallace in The Wire in 2002.
That character was a sensitive teenager trapped on the corners of Baltimore. His death on the show remains one of the most brutal moments in modern television. And audiences have kept his face in their memory ever since.
That was the exact moment he stopped being a promise.
After that role, he appeared in the daily soap All My Children and the sports drama Friday Night Lights in 2009. In the latter, he played Vince Howard, a young quarterback with a broken family life. Jordan has the ability to hold a shot without saying a word, and that caught the attention of directors looking for something more than a pretty face.
But the real turning point came when he met Ryan Coogler. This partnership is one of the most profitable in the American film industry since they made Fruitvale Station in 2013.
In 2013, he played Oscar Grant in a film that told the final hours of a young Black man killed by police. The movie won at Sundance and put Jordan on the radar of major Los Angeles studios. There, he proved he could carry the full dramatic weight of a true story without falling into cheap sentimentality.
And the boxing world agreed.
In 2015, he carried on the legacy of Rocky Balboa with Creed. He didn't just inherit a pair of gloves; he built Adonis Creed out of rage and abandonment. He trained for a year to get the body of a light heavyweight and shot most of the fight scenes without stunt doubles. The film grossed 173 million dollars worldwide and revived a franchise that seemed dead.
In 2018, he played Erik Killmonger in Black Panther. Many critics agree that his villain is the best-written in the entire Marvel lineup, thanks to his political motivations. Jordan gave the character a painful humanity that at times overshadowed the main protagonist.
His ambition never stopped at acting. In 2016, he founded his own production company, Outlier Society, to have creative control over his stories. He was one of the first in Hollywood to demand inclusion clauses in all his contracts to ensure diversity across crews.
In 2023, he made his definitive leap into directing with Creed III. He decided he no longer needed Sylvester Stallone to tell Adonis's story and took the risk of directing and starring at the same time. The film moved away from the classic style of boxing movies to incorporate visual influences from Japanese anime, which Jordan watches regularly.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, his company Outlier Society signed a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios to develop new film and television projects. Jordan is also working on the sequel to I Am Legend alongside Will Smith, under a contract that gives him full control over the development of his character. His salary per film already exceeds 15 million dollars, not counting profit percentages from each production.
