RJ Mitte didn't land in Los Angeles with a script under his arm or dreams of movie stardom. In 2006, he moved to California simply to support his younger sister's budding career. It was there that an agent noticed his mild cerebral palsy and suggested that his physicality could be a professional asset rather than an obstacle.
In 2008, he landed the role that would define his career on Breaking Bad. Playing Walter White Jr. posed an unexpected technical challenge because Mitte had to learn to walk with crutches and slow down his speech. His own disability is less severe than the character's, which required him to go through a process of unlearning his motor habits over five seasons.
And the gamble paid off.
AMC's hit production gave him a level of visibility that few actors with disabilities had achieved until then. But Mitte knew the danger of being typecast in victim roles was real. So he used his paycheck to pay off his family's mortgage and began looking for projects that moved away from conventional teen drama.
After the series ended in 2013, the actor sought new avenues for income and expression. In 2015 he surprised the industry by walking the runway at Milan Fashion Week for Vivienne Westwood. His presence in fashion broke aesthetic molds and showed that his image could sell luxury beyond the narrative of personal triumph over adversity.
In 2014 he joined the cast of Switched at Birth as Campbell Bing. It was a strategic move to stay in commercial television while financing his own forays into genre film. Mitte has always preferred the control of a producer to the whims of a casting director.
The industry is a cold place.
In 2017, he starred in the science fiction thriller The Last Survivors alongside Hayley Lu Richardson. In the film he played a young man who must survive in a world without water, and he proved he could carry a feature film without the backing of a major franchise. The shoot took place in extreme weather conditions in the California desert.
In 2019 he led the cast of the Australian romantic comedy Standing Up for Sunny. He played a man with cerebral palsy trying to make it in the world of live comedy. The film won Best Independent Film at that year's Cinema Australia Awards and strengthened his position in the international market.
In 2020, he took a major step into executive producing with the thriller The Oak Room. Mitte not only starred in the film but also got involved in its financing and creative decisions. He was looking for dark, cynical stories that had nothing to do with the family-friendly values of his early TV work.
In 2021, he shot Triumph, playing a high school student who fights to make the wrestling team. Although it is a sports drama, the actor insisted that the combat scenes be as realistic as possible. The script was inspired by the life of producer Michael D. Coffey, and Mitte accepted the role because of the raw dialogue.
Not everything is success in Hollywood.
In 2023, he premiered The Unseen, a horror-tinged drama in which he plays a man who gradually loses his sight. The production had a tight budget and was shot in just 18 days on location in Canada. The film was released mainly on digital platforms after a brief run at genre and B-movie festivals.
He currently lives in Brownsville and runs his own consulting firm that works to improve disability representation in the media. In 2024, the average budget of the independent productions he has been part of typically ranged from 2 to 5 million dollars. Filming for his next action movie was scheduled for the last quarter of 2025 in Georgia.
