Rob McElhenney shot the pilot of his flagship show on a budget of 200 dollars. Before fame, he waited tables in West Hollywood and piled up audition rejections for supporting roles that barely covered the rent. In 2004, he decided that if nobody would hire him, he would make his own work.
With a borrowed digital camera and two friends, he shot short scenes about a group of narcissists at a Philadelphia bar. That homemade footage ended up in FX's offices. The network bought the idea but required him to reshoot everything with a professional crew.
The risk was total.
In 2005, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia premiered. Critics were harsh at first because they didn't understand the dark humor and the characters' lack of morals. But the cult audience connected with that narrative grit. McElhenney kept full creative control as writer and executive producer from the very first minute.
Starting in 2006, Danny DeVito's addition to the cast saved the show from cancellation. The veteran actor accepted the role because his kids were fans of the series' irreverent humor. Rob learned then that the industry runs on strange impulses, and he decided never to give up control of his projects.
The audience responded with loyalty.
In 2011, the creator decided to gain 23 kilos for a single season of his show. He wanted to break the cliché of actors who get better looking as their shows succeed. He spent months eating five thousand calories a day just to prove that his character could be physically unpleasant.
Seven years later, he did the opposite. In 2018, he showed off a hyper-muscular body after months of military training. He posted on his social media that such a physical change was impossible without a team of nutritionists and trainers paid for by the studio. It was a direct critique of Hollywood's beauty standards disguised as cynical humor.
In 2020, he diversified his career with the release of Mythic Quest on Apple TV+. This time, he focused on the work environment of video game developers. The series explored power dynamics and ego in the tech offices of Silicon Valley. The project grew out of a direct collaboration with Ubisoft to ensure the realism of the sets.
But his life took a turn away from the Los Angeles sets.
McElhenney bought the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC in 2020 together with actor Ryan Reynolds. They paid £2 million for a club that was languishing in English football's fifth tier. The deal was not a whim of millionaires but a large-scale audiovisual production move.
In 2022, they launched the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham on Disney+. The goal was to monetize the failure and hope of a mining town through the screen. The strategy worked because the club's merchandise sales rose 400% in just two seasons on air.
His financial success in sports allowed him to fund new formats. In 2023, he founded More Better, a production company focused on content that blends entertainment with business management. Rob now runs an empire that ranges from distilled spirits to the image rights of semi-professional soccer players.
In 2024, Wrexham AFC won promotion to League One following an infrastructure investment that exceeded £10 million. The lease agreement for Racecourse Ground stadium was signed for a period of 99 years to secure full control of the property.
