Robin Tunney arrived in Los Angeles at eighteen with a suitcase full of secondhand clothes. Her parents had no connection to the film industry: her father sold cars and her mother worked in a bar. She simply wanted to act anywhere but Chicago.
In 1995 she agreed to shave her head completely to play Debra in Empire Records. It was a risky decision for an actress who had just started out. But that image of pure rebellion won her the lead role in The Craft just one year later.
It worked out better than expected.
That 1996 film earned more than fifty million dollars on a minimal budget. Tunney played Sarah Bailey, the new girl who discovers she has real powers. The shoot was intense, and the actresses spent hours under the California sun filming fictional rituals that later became cult favorites.
Big-budget projects followed that did not always click at the box office. In 1999 he shared the screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger in End of Days. A year later he hung from a mountain in Vertical Limit. These were physically demanding roles that required months of prep training at high-end gyms.
The film industry started to look the other way once Tunney turned thirty. So she decided to try her luck on the small screen before her name lost its pull. In 2005, she accepted the role of Veronica Donovan in the first season of Prison Break.
Her character was a tenacious lawyer trying to save an innocent man from the electric chair. But her real steady paycheck came with The Mentalist in 2008. She played agent Teresa Lisbon for seven full seasons without a break.
Television gave her the money that film denied her.
Tunney earned more than $100,000 per episode during the show's most-watched years. That gave her a financial security that few actors of her generation enjoy today. The chemistry with Simon Baker was the main engine of a production that was sold in more than 100 countries.
After her procedural era ended in 2015, she preferred to choose smaller projects. In 2018, she starred in the independent film Monster Party. It was a quick shoot lasting just a few weeks, in which she played a high-society woman with dark secrets.
In 2019 she returned to national network television with The Fix. The series was loosely based on the life of Marcia Clark, the prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson case. But ABC decided to cancel it after airing only ten episodes due to low ratings in the late-night slot.
Tunney joined the cast of Heaven in 2023 for Apple TV+. She played Martha Adler in the story of the survivors of a plane crash. Filming took place mainly in New York under the direction of Jason Katims.
The production had a production design budget that exceeded five million dollars per episode.
