Ruby Bentall was born with a script on the kitchen table.
The daughter of actors Janine Duvitski and Paul Bentall, her entry into the British industry was not an accident but a direct inheritance. In 2007, she made her television debut with a small role in the series Holby City.
That first brush with the camera marked the start of a career closely tied to period drama and British public television.
Nobody expected that vulnerability.
In 2008, she played Mary Bennet in the miniseries Lost in Austen. Her nervous take on Jane Austen's character stood out for breaking away from the usual canon. But her real workload came with Lark Rise to Candleford between 2009 and 2011.
There, she played Minnie, a maid that allowed her to work on physical comedy timing within a rigid setting. Bentall shot 38 episodes of this production before moving on to larger international projects.
Because her face fit perfectly into nineteenth-century stories.
In 2015, the BBC cast her as Verity Poldark in the revival of Poldark. Over four seasons, she held one of the series' most consistent emotional storylines. Her name became linked with the big Sunday night productions in England.
In 2012, he tried his luck on the stage of the National Theatre in Hansel & Gretel. This theater experience helped him build stage presence before returning to mainstream film.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019, she appeared in The Personal History of David Copperfield under the direction of Armando Iannucci. It was a fast shoot where she shared the cast with Dev Patel and Tilda Swinton. The film grossed 15 million dollars despite the global distribution challenges of that period.
In 2021, she joined the cast of Operation Mincemeat, a war drama centered on espionage during World War II. But her return to big-budget television came in 2022 with The Serpent Queen.
She played Angelica in the first season of the Starz series. In 2023, she joined the cast of Firebrand, a film about the final days of Henry VIII. Filming wrapped after seven weeks of location shooting at Haddon Hall castle.
