Sarah Yarkin doesn't fit the mold of the conventional action heroine. She stands just over five feet tall and has a gaze that always seems on the verge of a sarcastic remark. In 2022, she headed to a set in Bulgaria to film one of the bloodiest horror franchises in movie history.
That shoot was a pure test of physical endurance. She spent weeks covered in a sticky mix of corn syrup and red dye while escaping from an electric chainsaw. The production of that film used thousands of liters of fake blood to make the result as visceral as possible on screen.
Nobody expected a comedy actress to end up covered in blood.
Before landing big streaming budgets, she studied at UCLA. Los Angeles is a city that devours aspiring actors, but she decided theater was the necessary foundation. Her first roles in 2015 were brief appearances on series where she had barely three or four lines of dialogue.
The road to recognition in the American industry is rarely a straight line. Yarkin had to take jobs in short films and one-off episodes of sitcoms to pay the bills. So she learned to be quick and effective on every take.
In 2019, she landed a supporting role in Happy Death Day 2U. She played Dre Morgan, and there she discovered that horror mixed with humor was her comfort zone. The film performed well at the box office and opened doors to an industry that values exaggerated expressiveness.
But her big breakthrough in visibility came in 2020 with the series Motherland: Fort Salem. In this story of military witches, she played Libba Swythe and showed she could handle period drama without losing her essence. Her contract for this series included physical training clauses to simulate real combat.
Humor is her shield.
Although horror has given her some of her most viral moments, she prefers sitcoms. In 2023, she joined the cast of Not Dead Yet alongside Gina Rodriguez. On this ABC series, her role as Edwarda gave her a return to the pace of traditional television, with a live audience and fast-paced scripts.
And television offers her a stability that independent film can't guarantee. During filming of her scenes in 2023, she often improvised short lines that directors ended up keeping in the final cut. That ability to react is what keeps her working steadily.
In 2024, she appeared in the film The Thundermans Return, revisiting a character she had already played years earlier. Filming took place under strict safety measures and on a production schedule of just a few weeks. The movie premiered directly on digital platforms to capitalize on the nostalgia for teen favorites.
And the gamble paid off.
Sarah Yarkin still lives in Los Angeles and avoids unnecessary social events that add nothing to her craft. In her contracts over the past two years, she has started requiring specific rest periods between night shoots. The actors' union recorded her latest job with a base salary adjusted to the new 2024 scale.
