Stella Maeve was born in Nyack in 1989. She wasn't desperate for fame, but the camera found her quickly in the suburbs of New York. Her first major role came with Transamerica in 2005. She was only fifteen when she shared the set with Felicity Huffman in a production that broke financial records on the independent circuit.
It was a quiet start.
During those early years, she took one-off roles in procedural series. In 2005, she appeared in Law & Order: Criminal Intent and returned to the franchise in 2008 in a different role. She was working constantly, but the general public still hadn't put a name to her sharp gaze. Maeve has always had that kind of actress who observes more than she talks.
In 2010, she played Sandy West in the movie The Runaways. She had to learn to play the drums to keep up with a cast that included Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Critics weren't wild about the film, but she kept the rhythm of an electrifying production. That opened the door to bigger-budget television work.
And then her style changed completely.
Before moving into fantasy, she had a brief stint on Gossip Girl in 2008 and on Chicago P.D. between 2014 and 2015, where she played Nadia Decotis. Her exit from the police drama was one of the most talked-about, thanks to its raw script. That ending, however, let her take on the project that would define her professional maturity in front of a global audience.
The Magicians premiered in 2015 and was an exhausting physical and mental challenge. Playing Julia Wicker over five seasons meant venturing into very dark corners of the human psyche. The character went from academic exclusion to mystical trauma in just a few episodes. Sixty episodes stand as proof of a character build that avoided the easy tricks of young adult fantasy.
And audiences connected with that violent fragility.
While filming the series in 2018, she met Benjamin Wadsworth. They got engaged the following year, and their daughter Jo Jezebel was born in 2020. That same year, the Syfy series ended its run. It was a natural close to a chapter, coinciding with a much-needed pause to focus on her family life away from the spotlight in Vancouver.
After her magical chapter came to an end, she sought more down-to-earth roles. In 2022, she joined the cast of Mayans M.C. to play Kody in season four. It was a complete change of pace, with leather and gasoline replacing spellbooks. But Maeve always prefers shoots where the script bites and the setting is hostile.
In 2023, her run on the biker drama ended after ten episodes of intense drama. The actress has kept a stable home base in Los Angeles ever since. Season five of Mayans M.C. closed out her character's storyline with a no-return resolution.
