A pine tree where three squirrels live, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, is cut down and transported to Los Angeles. The record label JETT Records has bought it to sell as a Christmas tree. In the city lives David Seville, a composer and songwriter who can't make it in the music business. His latest demo has just been rejected by the label's chief executive, Ian Hawke, his former college roommate. Ian suggests he stop writing songs. His career seems stuck. The movie, directed by Tim Hill, brings Dave to life with Jason Lee leading the cast.

Trivia about Alvin and the Chipmunks

The DVD and Blu-ray release sold 7.5 million units and was the third best-selling DVD of 2008 in the United States, behind only The Dark Knight and Iron Man.
The soundtrack album was certified platinum for selling more than one million copies, and it is the Chipmunks' third platinum record.
According to MTV, the movie became the highest-grossing adaptation of a talking animal or cartoon animal until its sequel came out.
In the mid-credits scene where Ian tries to get some squirrels to sing, a trainer used nuts to make them turn their heads in different directions.
