Scared of What You Dream

Jessie and Mark are a married couple living in Alabama who decide to take in Cody, an eight-year-old boy who arrives at their home after passing through several foster families. From the very beginning, the boy shows an extreme fear of falling asleep, something his new parents didn't expect. They try to understand the source of that anguish and work to earn his trust while Cody resists closing his eyes every night. Social worker Natalie oversees the process and keeps a close eye on the family's adjustment. Jessie and Mark hope to give him stability and a safe place to call home, but Cody's unease starts to weigh on all of them.

Trivia about Before I Wake

In March 2015, the title was changed to Before I Wake, reportedly against Mike Flanagan's wishes.

Despite being pulled from the schedule in the United States, the movie received a theatrical release in some international markets in April 2016.

Charles Bramesco of The Guardian ranked it third on his list of the ten scariest Netflix original movies.

In December 2017, it was revealed that Netflix had acquired the U.S. rights to the movie from Relativity Media, giving it worldwide rights.

Mike Flanagan originally wanted to cast a boy who was 11 or 12 years old to play Cody, but Jacob Tremblay was six when he was chosen and had to play an older character.

Jacob Tremblay was hired for Before I Wake before starring in Room; during filming, he lost the baby teeth he still had at the start.

The project was originally titled Somnia and was conceived as the third thematic installment of a trilogy alongside Absentia and Oculus, whose scripts Flanagan wrote in just a few months.

Some scenes were shot at Barton Academy in Fairhope, Alabama, on December 12, 2013, as part of a shoot that began on November 11 and wrapped on December 16.
