Trivia about Demolition

The film opened the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, a prestigious debut that did not translate into strong box office earnings afterward.

In its first weekend in the United States and Canada, it grossed just $1.1 million, despite projections of $2 to $3 million, and finished in No. 15 at the box office.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 54% approval rating based on 210 reviews, with an average score of 5.8 out of 10.

Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted filming at John F. Kennedy International Airport on September 24, 2014, according to the press.

Jean-Marc Vallée had previously worked with Fox Searchlight on Wild, and when announcing Demolition, he said he hoped to work with the distributor again.

To film the demolition of the house, the crew found a real home about to be torn down and built an addition with walls, glass and a kitchen that Jake Gyllenhaal destroyed in a single documentary-style take, with no chance to repeat it.

The demolition sequence lasted about 45 minutes on camera, while the complete destruction of the house took roughly an hour and a quarter; no one was injured during filming.

Demolition won the Audience Award in the Headliners section at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, where it had its U.S. premiere on March 12.
