Harry Lockhart narrates in first person how he ended up at a Hollywood party in Los Angeles, shortly before Christmas. To explain, he goes back to New York, where he is a small-time thief with bad luck. After a robbery goes wrong at a toy store, the police are on his heels, and he needs to hide immediately. He accidentally walks into a building where auditions are being held for a detective movie and, to avoid drawing the attention of the officers, he passes himself off as an actor. The film is directed by Shane Black, and the lead role is played by Robert Downey Jr.
