Rockmond Dunbar was born in Oakland in 1973. His career did not begin with the glitter of red carpets but with academic training at the University of New Mexico. There he realized that acting demanded a physical presence that few actors of his generation were willing to develop.
In 1993, he earned his first credit in the drama Misery Loves Company. It was a small role. But it helped Los Angeles casting directors start noting his name on lists of supporting actors with potential.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2000, the project that changed his visibility in the industry arrived. He played Kenny Chadway on the series Soul Food. Dunbar worked on 74 episodes over four years and helped audiences connect with a complex, relatable character.
In 2005, he joined the cast of Prison Break to bring C-Note to life. The original script only planned for his appearance in a couple of episodes. The producers decided to keep him for the entire original series because his chemistry with the rest of the fugitives was too strong to waste.
Dunbar's career was always tied to high-rated television. In 2011, he joined Sons of Anarchy as Sheriff Eli Roosevelt. It was a three-season role in which he explored the moral ambiguity of a lawman in a world of criminal gangs.
But money isn't everything.
In November 2021, his departure from the series 9-1-1 caused an uproar in the American media. Dunbar had played Michael Grant since the start of production in 2018. His contract was abruptly terminated after he refused to comply with the COVID-19 vaccine mandate imposed by Disney.
The actor cited medical and religious objections to avoid the drug. The production company did not accept his exemptions and immediately decided to part ways with him.
In February 2022, Dunbar filed a formal lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television. The court filing accused the company of discrimination and retaliation. This legal move cooled his relations with the major studios for several months.
Away from the spotlight of the major networks, the actor turned to independent film and self-produced projects. In 2011, a genetic study linked him to the Yoruba ethnic group of Nigeria. The actor traveled to Africa and received the honorary name Omobowale.
That search for roots shaped his approach to choosing smaller projects.
In 2022, he starred in the thriller Red Winter. The story was shot on location in real snow to avoid costly digital effects. Dunbar played a man who must protect his family from killers in a hostile environment.
During 2023, he took part in the action film The Getback under director Jared Cohn. He played Malton in a plot about bounties and escapes. The film went straight to digital platforms without a traditional theatrical release.
The production of The Getback had an estimated budget of $2 million.
