Creed in hope.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Billy Hope, nicknamed "Billy the Great," a boxer who has reached the top. A world light heavyweight champion, he has racked up dozens of undefeated fights and lives in New York with his wife, Maureen, and their daughter, Leila. His career and home seem solid. However, during a bout at Madison Square Garden against Darius Jones, he takes several brutal punches to the face mid-fight. One of his eyes bleeds uncontrollably, and Maureen, watching from the crowd, is frightened at the sight. Even so, Hope scores a knockout and retains the title. Antoine Fuqua directs the film.

Trivia about Southpaw

To prepare for the role, Gyllenhaal read about boxing, boxers who grew up in orphanages, and the history of foster care in the United States, in addition to spending five months training as a boxer.
James Horner agreed to compose the film's soundtrack without charging a fee, despite the project's limited budget. His music was among the last he ever wrote.
The story was set to take place in Detroit, but Pittsburgh was chosen as the filming location, where it stood in for New York.
The unreleased song "Wiseman," by Frank Ocean, appears in the film's final act. It was originally written for Django Unchained, but Quentin Tarantino didn't include it in that movie.
