Washington, 1970s. Jack is a frustrated architect who, over time, becomes a killer. In the film's opening minutes, we see him talking to a man he calls Verge, to whom he recounts some of his crimes in order, as if they were episodes from his life. For Jack, each murder is a work of art that deserves to be understood. He wants his listener to grasp the method and logic behind each death, and he strives to justify his worldview. Verge listens, responds and tests his arguments, while Jack insists that his actions have a meaning of their own.

Trivia about The House That Jack Built

According to actor Peter Sarsgaard, he wanted to play Jack but had to turn down the lead role because of the nature of the film.

At the Cannes premiere, according to reports, more than 100 viewers walked out of the theater, although the screening was followed by a ten-minute standing ovation.

Despite public outrage over a scene in which the lead character mutilates a duckling as a child, PETA defended the film in a statement.

Von Trier split the shoot into two parts so he could edit in between, something he had already done on other films.

The film grossed roughly 5.57 million dollars worldwide, against an estimated budget of 8.7 million euros.

The uncensored British DVD and Blu-ray edition came out on March 4, 2019, and Scream Factory's American edition arrived in 2020 with both the theatrical and director's cuts.

The film won 11 awards and received 17 nominations, including the Best Director award at the Monster Fest in Melbourne in 2018.

Lars von Trier explained that casting was difficult because many actors wanted to work with him but turned down the script.
