Synopsis of 'Allo 'Allo!

Set in Nouvion, France, during the German occupation in World War II, the series follows René Artois, the owner of a village café. The Germans have looted the town and taken valuable items, including the first cuckoo clock ever made and Van Clomp's painting "The Fallen Madonna." The German commandant plans to keep the pieces once the war is over, so he forces René to guard them in his café. Meanwhile, René shelters two British RAF airmen, whom the Resistance, made up entirely of women, wants to send home. Created by David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd, the comedy airs on BBC One and stars Gorden Kaye.

Trivia about 'Allo 'Allo!

Croft and Lloyd conceived the series as a parody of the BBC war drama Secret Army, and launched the show with a pilot on December 30, 1982.
In 1985, Gorden Kaye and Carmen Silvera performed at the Royal Variety Performance in character as René and Edith, singing "I Remember It Well" from Gigi.
The exterior scenes were shot in Norfolk, mostly at Lynford Hall, while the interiors were filmed in front of a live audience at studios in London.
The road signs used as props for the outdoor scenes include Caen, Orbec, Falaise, Livarot and Pont l'Eveque, all located in the Calvados department.
The BBC planned 26 new episodes for a possible U.S. distribution deal, but the agreement did not go through as expected.
In 2007, the BBC aired the one-off special "The Return of 'Allo 'Allo!," filmed in Manchester, featuring original cast members and new interviews interspersed with clips from the series.
In 2016, the BBC reportedly ruled out a possible new version of the series over concerns that audiences would react negatively to the presence of Gestapo characters.
In 2022, Channel 5 aired a 67-minute retrospective special about the series, featuring interviews with Guy Siner, Vicki Michelle, Kim Hartman and Sue Hodge, plus a previously unseen archive interview with Gorden Kaye.
