Synopsis of Captain Tsubasa

Tsubasa Ōzora is 11 years old, attends elementary school and lives in Japan with his mother, while his father, a ship captain, travels the world. The boy is passionate about soccer and dreams of one day lifting the World Cup for his country. His family moves to Nankatsu, a fictional town in Shizuoka Prefecture known for its strong high school soccer teams. There he meets Ryo Ishizaki, a soccer-loving boy who sneaks out of his mother's public baths to play, and Sanae Nakazawa, an enthusiastic girl who cheers on the school team. The series opens with that first encounter with the town and with Tsubasa's passion for the game, which, as a baby, nearly led to a bus accident while he was playing with a ball. Based on the manga by Yōichi Takahashi, it aired on TV Tokyo.

Trivia about Captain Tsubasa

The author, Yōichi Takahashi, became fascinated with soccer after watching the 1978 World Cup, and that admiration led him to write a manga about the sport.

Because soccer wasn't popular in Japan, getting publisher Shueisha to approve the manga took two to three years.

La serie inspiró a futbolistas como Hidetoshi Nakata, Alessandro Del Piero, Zinedine Zidane o Lionel Messi para dedicarse profesionalmente al fútbol.

The series also influenced the film Shaolin Soccer, by Stephen Chow, released in 2001, and an Adidas line of running shoes.

In the spring of 2013, a bronze statue of Tsubasa Oozora was erected in Katsushika, Tokyo, in the neighborhood where the series' creator lives.

The theme song «Campeones (Oliver y Benji)» features music by Ninni Carucci and Alessandra Valeri Manera, lyrics by Carlos Toro Montoro and a performance by Miguel Morant for Spain.

The series reached a peak audience share of 21.2% on February 14, 1985, a record considered the highest achieved by any TV Tokyo anime production to date.

Before it aired, there were doubts within TV Tokyo that the sports anime genre had become outdated; in the end, the production became the network's biggest hit since its founding.
