Synopsis of Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds

France, 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIII. D'Artacán is a young dog who leaves Béarn and travels to Paris with one goal: to join the King's Musketeers. Upon arriving in the capital, he befriends three of them, Porthos, Athos and Aramis, and in his first steps he crosses paths with Juliette, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne of Austria. The series, created by Claudio Biern Boyd and broadcast by Televisión Española, adapts Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers with anthropomorphic characters, mostly dogs. Its premise revolves around an ambitious young man who wants to earn a place among those who serve the king.

Trivia about Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds

The series won the bronze medal at the New York Festival of International Film & TV in 1982.

In Brazil, it aired in 1984 on Rede Manchete, as part of the children's program Clube da Criança, hosted by Xuxa Meneghel.

The English version was recorded in Madrid with a group of American expats living there because of the nearby Torrejón Air Base.

D'Artacán is a beagle, named as a tribute to Charles M. Schulz's character Snoopy, whom Claudio felt a special affinity for.

D'Artacán's initial design was very different from the final version: a surviving pilot shows that BRB Internacional modified it before final production to make him a more recognizable character.

The series was a co-production between BRB Internacional and Japan's Nippon Animation, which also animated other well-known TV productions in Spain.

The adaptation changed the names of several characters from Alexandre Dumas' novel through wordplay that was part of the series' identity.

The 3D movie released in 2021 revived the franchise, with Claudio Biern Boyd as producer and screenwriter, Toni García as director, and Paco Sáez in charge of character design.
