Synopsis of The Ren & Stimpy Show

Ren Höek is a volatile, mentally unstable chihuahua, and Stimpson J. Cat, known as Stimpy, is a kind but not-too-bright manx cat. Together they form a duo that changes roles in every episode: they might be space explorers, Old West horse thieves or hosts of nature programs. In nearly all of these situations, the two clash, and this forced coexistence gives rise to the conflicts that drive each episode. Created by John Kricfalusi, the series aired in the United States on Nickelodeon between 1991 and 1995, and is presented as an animated comedy in the style of classic cartoons, with carefree, nonstop humor.

Trivia about The Ren & Stimpy Show

Vanessa Coffey, vice president of animation production, wasn't interested in the three pitches Kricfalusi brought to Nickelodeon, but she was interested in Ren & Stimpy, which she chose for a series of its own.

Kricfalusi drew inspiration from an Elliott Erwitt photograph, printed on a postcard, to create Ren, which showed a chihuahua in a sweater at the feet of a woman.

Some episodes from the second season onward were animated with digital ink and paint, which was very unusual in television animation before 1998.

Due to its strong ratings in the first season, Nickelodeon renewed the series for twenty more episodes in November 1991.

In 1993 it became the most-watched cable television program in the United States.

In "Powdered Toast Man," a cross was removed from the Pope's hat, and the credits began attributing the character to "the man with the pointy hat."

To prepare for the voice of Stimpy, Billy West received a reference recording and practiced his own interpretation before going to the voice audition.

Nickelodeon fired John Kricfalusi in 1992 following conflicts with the standards and practices department and production delays; Bob Camp later took over as creative director.
