Synopsis of Courage the Cowardly Dog

Courage is a timid, easily frightened beagle who lives on a farm on the outskirts of Nowhere, a fictional town in Kansas. Muriel, a loving woman, adopted him as a puppy, and he shares the house with her and with Eustace, a grumpy farmer. Farmers usually ignore the dangers around them, but the farm doesn't stay calm for long. Monsters, aliens, zombies and ghosts are drawn to the place and threaten their simple way of life. Courage will have to overcome his fear to protect his owners and restore peace to the farm. Created by John R. Dilworth and aired on Cartoon Network, the series mixes comedy and horror in every episode.

Trivia about Courage the Cowardly Dog

The premiere of 1999 set a ratings record for Cartoon Network, capturing the attention of 2.4% of the households that had access to its signal.

John R. Dilworth came up with the story of the alien chicken after his visit to the farm where his girlfriend's family lived.

To pitch the project in Hollywood, Dilworth decided to show up in a space suit and juggle.

In the original short, the script was reduced to grunts and screams, and Courage had only one line: «This shouldn't happen to a dog. Ouch!».

In 2012, Entertainment Weekly ranked the series fifth on its list of the top ten Cartoon Network shows.

The short film that paved the way for the series, «The Chicken from Outer Space», was nominated for an Oscar, an Annie and a CableACE before it became a series, which led Cartoon Network to order regular episodes.

The series ran for 52 half-hour episodes, with John R. Dilworth serving as executive producer, director and co-writer of every one of them, and also voicing several characters.

In 2021, Warner Bros. Animation announced the direct-to-video movie «Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog», a crossover between the two franchises.
