María de Todos los Ángeles is searching for true love, though heartbreaks have left her fed up with trying. Determined to change her luck, she asks the angels of the heavenly court for help. They answer her in dreams with signs, but she always interprets them her own way, and misunderstandings pile up. Everything changes when she meets her neighbor Albertano Santacruz, a romantic young man who wants to make it big as a grupera singer. Their romance runs into Doña Lucha, an overprotective mother who has raised her children alone and has no intention of letting her favorite son fall for just anyone. María lives in the apartment across the hall with her grandfather, Don Carmelo, a stingy man who runs a Chinese products store.
