Synopsis of Mr. Queen

In present-day South Korea, Jang Bong-hwan is a high-end chef who works at the Blue House, the official residence of the president. He is a charismatic playboy who enjoys his success with women until hidden enemies set him up: he is fired and accused of corruption. Pursued by the police, he is involved in an accident that seems fatal. When he wakes up, his soul has traveled to the year 1851 and inhabits the body of Kim So-yong, who has become Queen Cheorin, wife of King Cheoljong. The monarch is kind and easygoing, but he is a king in name only, because real power lies with the Queen Dowager Sunwon. To return to his own body, Bong-hwan must win the Queen Dowager's favor by cooking for her.

Trivia about Mr. Queen

Kim Jung-hyun and Seol In-ah had previously co-starred in the drama School 2017, so this series reunites the two actors.

The final episode reached a nationwide viewership rating of 17,371%, and the series is the eleventh highest-rated drama in the history of Korean cable television.

A third of the Chinese web series on which this drama is based was censored in China, where the government even pulled it off the internet for a week.

On March 26, 2021, production company CJ ENM decided to remove the series from all platforms and rerun services after criticism for distorting Korean history.

Filming was halted on November 24, 2020 after a supporting actor tested positive for COVID-19.

The production added a special episode due to the strong audience response, although all the originally planned episodes had already been filmed before the broadcast.

tvN premiered the spin-off "Mr. Queen: The Secret," also titled "Mr. Queen: Bamboo Forest," in six parts over two special episodes that aired on February 13 and 14, 2021.

Shin Hye-sun was nominated for Best Actress (Television) and Cha Chung-hwa for Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Baeksang Arts Awards.
