The Ambition of Distance

Andrea Thompson left her home in Ohio at just sixteen years old. She wasn't seeking fame or applause, but rather a comfortable distance from her roots. After a stay in Australia, she returned to the United States to train as an actress under Strasberg.

The industry responded quickly.

In 1987, she landed the role of Genele Ericson in the series Falcon Crest. That production taught her the inner workings of commercial television and the pace of work at major studios. Shortly after, she appeared in the film Wall Street under the direction of Oliver Stone.

That brief big-screen appearance did not change the course of her career on television. Thompson preferred the steady continuity of TV scripts to the uncertainty of film shoots in the late eighties. That choice defined her professional standing over the next two decades.

The weight of the law and of space

Her casting in Babylon 5 in 1994 marked a complete change of pace. She played telepath Talia Winters for two full seasons. But the development of her character never fully convinced her, so she decided to leave the space station in search of projects with more down-to-earth dramatic weight.

In 1996, she joined NYPD Blue to play Detective Jill Kirkendall. The role demanded a technical restraint that specialist critics praised. She stayed on the police drama until 2000 and earned several nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Then she decided to give up everything.

Thompson felt that her time in fiction on screen was running out. In 1999, she began preparing for a career leap that few in Hollywood understood at the time. She was looking for the rigor of pure, hard information.

From the fiction set to the newsroom desk

She started working as a journalist at a local news station in New Mexico to gain real experience. She worked sixteen-hour days to make up for her lack of formal training in communications. She wanted to be respected for her analytical skills, not for her past in hit series.

CNN hired her in 2001 for its Headline News channel. Her signing caused considerable media buzz in traditional American newsrooms. Many veteran journalists criticized an actress taking a national news spot at a time of intense political tension.

Pressure from the media and leaked images from her previous career made her daily reporting work difficult. So she resigned from her position at the news network in 2002. The experience brought her back to acting, but with a much more skeptical view of the entertainment business.

Discretion won out over glamour.

The Voice Refuge

In 2003, she returned to acting with a role in the third season of 24. It was a functional comeback with no real aspirations to stardom. Over the following years, she made occasional appearances on shows such as JAG, Bones, and Criminal Minds, never seeking the spotlight the way she had during her years on the New York City police drama.

Voice acting for video games became her main line of work starting in 2010. She lent her voice to characters in titles such as Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: The Old Republic. This field gave her financial stability far from the usual promotional circuit of Los Angeles.

In 2024, her professional activity is limited to very specific voice-over projects and occasional appearances at science fiction conventions. She lives away from public attention in the New Mexico area. Her divorce from her second husband, Jerry Doyle, was finalized in 1997 after only two years of marriage.
