Synopsis of NYPD Blue

Detectives John Kelly and Andy Sipowicz work together at the 15th Precinct in Manhattan, New York. Sipowicz is the veteran partner, but he is an alcoholic who drinks both on and off duty, and his behavior makes it doubtful the partnership will last much longer. Kelly genuinely cares for him, although he grows more and more exasperated with him. His personal life gives him no break: he reluctantly divorces his wife, Laura, and begins a relationship with Janice Licalsi, a uniformed officer whose father, also a cop, is on the payroll of mob boss Angelo Marino. The series was created by Steven Bochco and David Milch and aired on ABC.

Trivia about NYPD Blue

The series was initially conceived as a vehicle for David Caruso, who played John Kelly, the lead character, and the first season revolved around him.
The opening theme is an instrumental piece by prolific TV composer Mike Post, which never changed across the series' seasons.
WLOX, of Biloxi, Mississippi, was the only ABC affiliate that never aired a single episode of the series, opting instead to broadcast syndicated comedies.
The series earned 84 Primetime Emmy nominations and won 20 of them, including the award for Outstanding Drama Series.
In addition to its television awards, the series received two Peabody Awards and the Producers Guild of America award for Best Episodic Drama.
In its final season, the series was shot entirely in Los Angeles to save money, while New York exteriors were filmed only with the city's landmarks.
The exterior scenes of the 15th Precinct were filmed at the 9th Precinct building on East 5th Street, which was also used for Kojak.
Before its premiere, 57 ABC affiliates refused to air the first episode due to its language, partial nudity and a shower scene; the boycott campaign was led by Reverend Donald Wildmon and the American Family Association.
