Aubrey Dollar was born in Raleigh in 1980 and didn't take long to step onto a professional set. Before turning fifteen, she had already appeared in Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice. She was 1992, and B-grade horror movies served as a training ground for young talent in North Carolina.
But she truly learned the pace of work on the soap opera sets of New York. In 1999 she joined One Life to Live as Joey Riley. There she faced marathon shoots and scripts that changed every morning.
Consistency is her most distinctive trait.
That experience allowed her to make the leap to bigger-budget productions without the industry's stress taking a toll. In 2000 she landed the role of Marcy Bender on Dawson's Creek. The show was the center of teen drama at the time, and Dollar fit right into a storyline that demanded naturalness and flawless diction.
Mid-2000s American television was looking for formulas that mixed mystery with character-driven drama. In 2005, she starred in Point Pleasant as Judy Miller. The series barely lasted one season, but it helped her prove she could carry a lead storyline.
Then came her turn in police procedurals.
In 2007, she joined the cast of Women's Murder Club to play Cindy Thomas. Over 13 episodes, she played a crime reporter who helped solve murders in San Francisco. The series was canceled despite a loyal audience of several million viewers per night.
Setbacks like these are common in the Los Angeles industry. So Dollar chose to diversify her career by alternating TV with independent film. In 2012 she took part in Save the Date, a movie that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and where she shared scenes with Lizzy Caplan.
Unlike other actors who get stuck chasing mass success in Hollywood, she always returned to the stage. Theater in New York has allowed her to maintain a level of craft that TV sometimes neglects. She has worked in Off-Broadway productions such as The Juvenile Jones Show and Completeness.
The set doesn't allow for editing tricks.
In 2015, she returned to the TV spotlight with Battle Creek, a series created by David Shore and Vince Gilligan. She played the evidence management office of the police department. But the show failed to get renewed, and the project ended after its first batch of episodes.
Her ability to stay active in the industry without major scandals or sharp ups and downs is rare. In 2022 she appeared in The Good Fight, and for 2023 and 2024 she has been part of the cast of Power Book IV: Force, playing Hedwig. Filming for the latter production took place mainly in Chicago locations under the cinematography of Aaron Medick.
