The jaw that terrified Stallone

Brian Thompson has a face that looks like it was designed by an architect obsessed with straight lines. He isn't the typical method actor chasing easy tears, because his tool of the trade has always been a physical presence that intimidates without him having to open his mouth. In 1984, he appeared for just three minutes in The Terminator, and that was enough for casting directors across half of Hollywood to take note of his name.

That opening scene alongside Bill Paxton opened the doors to the rawest action films of the 1980s. But it was in 1986 that his career took a decisive turn when he played the Night Slasher in Cobra. Sylvester Stallone was looking for someone who would be a real threat, and Thompson fit the role with a coldness that still haunts genre fans today.

That casting changed his bank account forever.

But Thompson is more than a gym body and an icy stare. Before arriving in Los Angeles, he studied Business Administration at Central Washington University and then earned a master's degree in Fine Arts at the University of California. That academic training helped him understand the industry as a business of endurance, where the goal isn't to be the star but to be the guy everyone remembers when the credits roll.

And the gamble paid off.

Makeup, prosthetics and outer space

Throughout the nineties, his physique let him move from the big screen to television with astonishing ease. He specialized in celebrities who required hours in the makeup chair and endless patience. In Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he played several aliens who required layers of latex over his face.

Makeup was his second skin.

In 1995, he joined the cast of The X-Files to bring to life the alien bounty hunter. It was a supporting role, but his ability to convey danger without batting an eye kept him connected to the series until 2000. Chris Carter knew Thompson could hold the tension of a scene with just the way he walked.

Not everything was critical success, however. In 1997, he accepted the role of Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and the film was a box office disaster that nearly sank the franchise. The shoot was chaotic, and the visual effects did little to help his performance stand out above the noise. The movie grossed 51 million dollars against a budget that spiraled out of control due to logistical problems in Thailand.

The Maturity of a Premium Supporting Actor

As the muscle-bound heroes of the eighties fell out of fashion, Thompson learned to adapt to more restrained roles. In 2011, he directed and starred in The Extendables, a film in which he parodied his own tough-guy image and poked fun at the clichés that had typecast him for decades. It was an act of honesty few actors of his generation dared to attempt.

Joel Coen brought him back to the big screen in 2021 with The Tragedy of Macbeth. In this adaptation shot in minimalist black and white, Thompson played a murderer with a restraint that surprised those who knew him only from his fights with Stallone or Schwarzenegger. It proved that his physical presence was still intact, while his dramatic range had gained depth over time.

In 2023, he took part in the series 9-1-1, playing Captain Gerrard. Filming for his episodes involved twelve-hour days in which the actor proved he still maintains the same professional discipline he had when he started in the eighties. He still weighs 95 kilos of pure muscle and keeps a strict training routine that allows him to perform his own stunts without doubles in most of the technical shots.

Thompson lives away from the spotlight of the red carpets and prefers the tranquility of his home in the valley. He doesn't chase constant applause or trendy magazine covers. His name appears in more than one hundred production credits across film and television since his professional debut. The contract for his latest television appearance was closed under standard SAG-AFTRA union terms, with no diva demands.
