The Task of Replacing the Irreplaceable

Cheryl Ladd landed on the set of Charlie's Angels in 1977 with the impossible task of filling Farrah Fawcett's shoes. The press of the time predicted an absolute disaster for the ABC series because nobody believed audiences would accept an unknown. But producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg trusted that girl from South Dakota who had already voiced cartoon characters years earlier.

Ladd played Kris Munroe (Jill's younger sister) for four consecutive seasons. That contract brought her instant global fame, but it also locked her into a Californian beauty archetype that was very hard to break. During the filming of 1978, tensions on set were constant due to pressure from audiences and scrutiny from critics.

And the gamble paid off.

The actress kept ratings steady, and her face went on to sell millions of posters around the world. Behind the cameras, though, the reality was less glamorous, as the work pace exceeded fourteen hours of filming a day. So when the series ended in 1981, she immediately sought to distance herself from the character.

The afternoon movie haven

In 1978 she recorded her first studio album and earned a gold record with the single Think It Over. She was no outsider to music: before arriving in Hollywood, she already sang with the group The Music Shop during tours through the Midwest. In the late eighties, she turned to television movies to move away from the sex symbol image the industry had imposed on her.

She starred in Grace Kelly in 1983, where she played the Princess of Monaco with a restraint that surprised casting directors. In 1994 she led the cast of One West Waikiki, playing a forensic scientist in Hawaii. It was an attempt to prove she could carry an action series without relying on a trio of female leads.

Television never forgot her.

Starting in the nineties, her career focused on supporting roles in hit series such as CSI: Miami and Charmed. But her real financial stability came from her work as a writer of children's books and golf guides (a sport she plays with an enviable handicap). In 2005 she published Token Chick, in which she recounted her experiences in a traditionally male-dominated world.

Maturity in Front of the Camera

As the new century began, her profile shifted to mother and grandmother roles in fast-paced productions. In 2017 she appeared in the thriller Unforgettable alongside Katherine Heigl, playing a manipulative, cold woman. It was a brief but cutting role that showed her ability for dark drama when the script allowed it.

In 2022 she accepted the challenge of competing on Dancing with the Stars at age 71. That decision aimed to keep her presence in the American market while she continued shooting movies for the Hallmark channel. She lasted three weeks before being eliminated by the technical jury's vote.

In 2022 she shot the movie Groundswell for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, playing the character Maggie. The production was filmed entirely on location in Hawaii under the direction of Ian Wright. The estimated budget for these TV movies typically ranges between two and three million dollars per shoot.
