Devon Sawa needed only five minutes on screen for half the planet to plaster their bedroom walls with his face. In 1995, the movie Casper brought him a fame he never asked for and didn't know how to handle well at the time.
He appeared at the end of the film as the human version of the ghost, and that was enough. He was only seventeen, but he already carried the weight of being the heartthrob of teen magazines around the world.
That was his first big problem.
Sawa wanted to shake off the image of the blond, angelic boy at all costs. That's why he agreed to star in The Hand That Feeds in 1999, playing a drifter whose right hand takes on a life of its own and kills people.
It was a risky bet that critics tore apart but that over time gained a cult following on video store shelves. A year later came Final Destination, and his role as Alex Browning confirmed that horror was his true comfort zone.
Grossed over $112 million at the box office on a modest budget of $23 million.
Then came the music video for Stan with Eminem in 2000. His portrayal of an obsessive, violent fan wiped out in one stroke any trace of his past in Disney productions or family movies.
In the mid-2000s, the actor decided he'd had enough of the Los Angeles industry. He moved back to his native Canada to try to live a normal life, away from the spotlight and from auditions that didn't interest him.
But money runs out, or the itch to act comes back. In 2010, he returned to television in the series Nikita, playing Owen Elliot for three consecutive seasons.
Hollywood had forgotten him, but he had not forgotten how to act.
Sawa later admitted that the break was necessary so he wouldn't end up like other burnt-out child stars of his generation. In 2013, he married Dawni Sahanovitch and put personal stability ahead of big studio contracts.
Don Mancini gave him a golden opportunity in 2021 with the series Chucky. Curiously, the creator of the killer doll franchise has had him play four different characters across the show's three seasons.
Sawa has died and come back to life on screen more times than almost any other actor of his generation. In the third season, which aired in 2024, he plays none other than the President of the United States within the series' universe.
It was a conscious decision.
In 2024, he also appeared in the series Hacks, playing a romantic interest of the lead character in an episode that reminded many viewers of his natural charm. He still lives in Vancouver and chooses his roles based more on fun than on the project's commercial appeal.
Filming of his last television appearance wrapped after fourteen weeks of intensive work in Toronto.
