Jared Padalecki stands almost six feet, six inches tall and spent fifteen winters in a row on a Vancouver set, dodging fake blood and stunt doubles. Few actors of his generation kept up with the pace of American network television without burning out in the process.
In 2000, he landed in Los Angeles at eighteen with a cheap suitcase. He won the role of Dean Forester in Gilmore Girls after a quick ten-minute audition. For five seasons, he played Rory Gilmore's model first boyfriend, a character designed to appeal to mothers and daughters across half of North America. The mainstream networks of the era needed docile heartthrobs to anchor their family lineups.
That school of rapid-fire dialogue gave him solid experience.
But the good-guy-next-door image became too tight for him once the commercial film industry came knocking. In 2005, he starred in the remake of House of Wax alongside Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton, a teen horror film that brought in nearly seventy million dollars at the worldwide box office. Four years later, he led the revival of Friday the 13th in 2009, proving his physique fit right into gory genre cinema.
In the fall of 2005, he started the project that defined his lifestyle for the next fifteen years. Eric Kripke paired him with Jensen Ackles in Supernatural to bring brothers Sam and Dean Winchester to life. The premise seemed modest: two guys driving back roads in a Chevrolet Impala from 67, hunting urban legends.
The show survived writers' strikes, the merger of The WB with UPN, and constant changes to its time slot. Filming took up nine months of the year, with fourteen-hour days in brutal weather conditions. At one point, the fiction started to consume the person.
That nearly cost him his mental health.
During the filming of the third season in 2007, he suffered a breakdown in his trailer, diagnosed as clinical depression. Rather than hiding it in an era when agents demanded absolute silence, in 2015 he launched the Always Keep Fighting campaign to raise funds and bring attention to anxiety disorders in the entertainment industry. The series ended its run in 2020 with 327 episodes filmed, a figure unmatched by contemporary serial fiction.
After the end of the hunter brothers, he decided to return home. In 2021, he took on the dual role of lead actor and executive producer on Walker, a reimagining of Chuck Norris's classic, produced entirely in Austin to avoid moving to Canada. The series debuted with the network's best ratings in five years.
And the business worked until the rules of the game changed.
In May 2024, the network's new management canceled the show after four seasons and sixty-nine episodes. Padalecki publicly criticized the move in the American press, denouncing the corporate bet on low-budget programming and cheap entertainment formats. It was a loud falling-out after twenty years of uninterrupted loyalty to the same broadcasting company.
So he looked for options outside that boundary. In 2024, he signed on as a guest star in the third season of the firefighter drama Fire Country on CBS. Months later, he confirmed his return for the fifth season of The Boys, set to film in 2025 under creator Eric Kripke.
The production of that final season set its shooting budget in Toronto at more than ten million dollars per episode.
