Jessica Biel spent much of her teenage years trying to make audiences forget who Mary Camden was.
In 2000, she posed for Gear magazine topless. She was seventeen, and the scandal nearly cost her her role on 7th Heaven, the series that put her on the American TV map. That decision was the first sign that she wasn't going to settle for the role of a preacher's perfect daughter.
And the plan worked.
After leaving family television, she turned to genre films. In 2003, she starred in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a film that grossed $107 million worldwide on a budget of just nine million.
But the road to being taken seriously was neither direct nor easy.
During the first decade of the 2000s, Biel took on projects that focused more on exploiting her looks than on her acting ability. She appeared in Blade: Trinity in 2004 and in Stealth in 2005. The latter was a financial disaster for Sony Pictures, with estimated losses of more than one hundred million dollars.
The industry started to see her as a supporting actress in big-budget films dominated by men. She knew it. In 2006, she tried to change course with The Illusionist, where she shared the screen with Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. It was a quality detour amid romantic comedies and action films that never quite caught on at the global box office.
And then she stopped seeking other people's approval.
Biel realized that if she wanted complex roles, she would have to finance them herself. Hollywood's studio system rarely gives second chances to actors who have been typecast in commercial action films.
The founding of her production company, Iron Ocean Films, marked the definitive turning point in her career. In 2017, she premiered The Sinner on USA Network. She was not only the lead but also the executive producer, with full control over the project's dark, psychological tone.
Critics embraced her new direction right away. She received nominations for the Golden Globes and the Emmys for her role as Cora Tannetti. It was the moment when the industry stopped talking about her looks and started talking about her ability to manage high-budget television projects.
In 2022, she returned to producing with Candy, a limited series for Hulu based on a real-life Texas crime. She played Candy Montgomery and took on the challenge of recreating a period drama with a heavy, uncompromising emotional weight.
She is scheduled to premiere The Better Sister on Amazon Prime Video in 2025. In this project, she again serves as producer and lead alongside Elizabeth Banks.
Her commitment to creative control has been total.
Iron Ocean Films runs a production setup based in Los Angeles and has a preferred distribution deal for several of its fiction titles. In 2024, the company closed casting for its next suspense series, with an estimated budget of five million dollars per episode.
