Jessica Williams

The Political Comedy Lab

Jessica Williams showed up at the offices of The Daily Show in 2012 at just 22 years old. Jon Stewart was looking for a fresh voice for his fake news desk and found a college student who still didn't know how the industry worked from the inside.

She became the youngest correspondent in the show's history. It was a trial by fire in front of millions of viewers who had no patience for a timing mistake or a badly placed joke.

Television made her grow up overnight.

In 2016, she decided her time on the satirical news show had come to an end. Many people thought leaving the most powerful showcase in American television was a mistake, but she had other plans in mind.

She teamed up with Phoebe Robinson to launch the 2 Dope Queens podcast. The format worked so well that HBO bought the rights to produce several TV specials in 2018. They talked about sex, race and hair without asking anyone's permission.

And the risk paid off.

Breaking into the big franchises

In 2017, she starred in The Incredible Jessica James, directed by Jim Strouse. The film premiered on Netflix, and critics praised her ability to carry a romantic comedy without falling into the genre's usual clichés.

But the big-budget film world was waiting for her elsewhere. In 2022, Williams entered the universe of J.K. Rowling with Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. She played Professor Eulalie Hicks and secured a spot in one of the most profitable franchises of the decade.

Filming this big-budget production allowed her to work with budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars. It was a radical jump in scale compared to her beginnings in Los Angeles comedy clubs.

In 2023, Williams joined the cast of the Apple TV+ series Shrinking. She shares the screen with Harrison Ford and Jason Segel in a story that blends grief with professional therapy.

Her character is named Gaby, and the writers created the role specifically for her. The series received the green light for a second season in 2024 after strong viewership numbers on the platform.

The industry stopped seeing her as a promising newcomer.

Williams now manages her career from New York and avoids social events that have no direct connection to her work. In 2024, production of her projects is governed by a multi-year contract that protects her creative freedom from the major studios. The actress keeps her residence in Brooklyn and limits her public appearances to the mandatory promotional tours required by her contract.
