Julie Michaels didn't need a stunt double to take a hit from Patrick Swayze in 1989. That sequence in Road House launched her career in an industry that wanted her as a pretty face but ended up respecting her for her ability to take a punch. Her character, Denise, was a dangerous lure in a movie of testosterone and neon.
And the gamble paid off.
Before joining Joel Silver's set, she was a competitive gymnast and Miss Washington. But Michaels soon realized that beauty crowns didn't pay the bills in the action movies of the nineties. In 1993, she played agent Elizabeth Marcus in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, and that's when her body began to suffer the real wear and tear of the job.
The pain was part of the paycheck.
During the nineties, her name appeared in the credits of Batman & Robin and Titanic. On James Cameron's 1997 film, she wasn't after the close-up but the perfect fall into icy water. Her move from actress to stunt performer happened naturally, because she preferred the precision of a ten-meter fall to the drama of a monologue.
She formed a creative and personal partnership with Peewee Piemonte, her husband and partner in designing cinematic violence. Together they founded JMP Productions to professionalize the chaos that Los Angeles directors demanded. In 2011, she received the first female Emmy nomination for stunt coordination on the series Southland.
That recognition broke a glass ceiling the actors' union still didn't know how to handle. But she didn't stop at awards galas. In 2014, she worked on John Wick and helped define the crisp fighting style that revitalized modern action cinema.
The fake blood was the least of it.
Michaels went from being the woman who fell down the stairs to the one who decided how everyone else should fall. Between 2017 and 2024, she worked as stunt coordinator on the series Seal Team. There she managed safety budgets and combat choreography that had to look like real military operations.
In 2020, she oversaw stunt sequences in several episodes of The Walking Dead. Her technical approach puts physical safety ahead of cheap spectacle. The trick isn't jumping but knowing how to land without the production grinding to a halt over an injury.
The industry changed, and she adapted to the new safety protocols of 2022. Her company now manages contracts that include specific clauses for the use of wires and controlled explosives. In 2024, she supervised the action logistics across 14 consecutive episodes of a single television series.
